Instagram: Photo-Based Social Networking App Hits Goldmine

Instagram has been a big name in the world of iPhone apps for quite a while now. In fact, Apple officially named Instagram their “iPhone App of the Year” for 2011, and following this week’s release to Android users, the buzz is sure to get even bigger.

For those who are unfamiliar with the app, Instagram is a photo-based social networking outlet. Differing from other popular social networks, Instagram is a primarily mobile-based application that is available for download on Android and iOS based products. While the photos of public users can be viewed online, the ability to manipulate and upload pictures is exclusive to the mobile app.

Unlike traditional photo hosting applications, Instagram also allows its users to alter their photos using a set of pre-determined filters and borders. These distinct filters allow Instagrammers to make their photos appear more or less saturated, darkened or lightened, sepia toned, tinted, or a variety of other options. After the user has taken their picture and edited it to their liking, it is then posted to a live photo feed where their followers can see, like, and comment on the image.

With Instagram, photo editing and sharing are easy and immediate, and we can’t wait to see what the future holds for this fascinating app. Included below are a few of our personal grams that we found instaworthy.

That ice cream and that dog is perfection. I do love instagram. I’ve been doing it way too much now that it came out for android.

Such a simple idea, yet it has become so elegant and powerful in changing a simple photo taken by the average user.

p.s. that dog photo is sick!
